For the past 15 years, I chose to be a stay at home parent. When my children started secondary school, I decided that I wanted to re-enter the workforce. While I still retained many of the skills I had acquired prior to my career break, I recognised that my computer literacy skills fell way below the standard now expected by employers. After looking at all training options open to me and following a consultation with Maria in Pitman Training Swords where I discussed my career aspirations and how best to achieve them, I decided to enrol and study for a Legal Secretarial Diploma.

Throughout all the modules in the Diploma course I chose, I found the comprehensive study material and its practical application really suited my needs. In addition, seminars with recruitment consultants organised by Pitman Training gave guidance on preparation of CV’s and interview techniques. This coupled with the encouragement and advice I received from Maria and her staff throughout the course was invaluable in my pursuit to get back into the workforce.

When I had completed all the core Microsoft Office modules I felt confident enough to start sending my CV to prospective employers. Using every contact that I and my family and friends had, I emailed my CV’s to all those on my target list. After 8 weeks I was invited for an interview and was subsequently offered an administration position in an accountancy practice. While I am a capable person and have a good overall skill set, I am absolutely certain that without proficiency in Microsoft Office and in particular Excel, Word and PowerPoint I would not have got past the interview stage. The practical way in which I learned these in Pitman Training has given me great confidence in my ability to do whatever tasks are set in a professional and efficient manner.

I am now 3 months in my new job and indications are looking positive that it may become a long term contract. I am deeply grateful to Maria, Stasia and Paul for all their help and guidance and would highly recommend Pitman Training to anyone considering returning to the workforce.
